Internet Movie Script Database
I’ve been coming to IMSDB.com for a couple of years as my other source for reading free screenplays as I continue studying about screenwriting. I learned about it through a mailinglist which I used to subscribe to and the members there even add a cautionary note when reading scripts here. My first impression was it had a basic, bland look which made me wonder because with the name IMSDb, I associated it to IMDB, which is the Internet Movie Database. The IMDB had a professional look and feel on the site which a non-IMDBPro user can still see and experience. I initially thought the script database acted like a sister site to IMDB, specializing on script repository.
It still made me wonder why it was left out when IMDB updated their look several years ago. The IMSDb site downloaded quickly to my PC. I prefer reading screenplays on a larger computer monitor than on a mobile device. So looking at their layout, maybe they can update by moving around the items to make use of the white space of the site. The item I think would the sponsor advertisement that was on the left of the screen to the bottom. The other items such as:”Search field” can be located at the right-hand side just below their “Welcome section,” which at present, they’ve placed at the end of site. It was strange.
Daily Script

Next, they can have the alphabetical links to screenplays laid out across the homepage, the search by “Genre section” can be set right after the alphabetical links. A break in a layout, maybe in columns for “Last Added Sections and New Releases” but still include the thumbnails as they did here because this for me, it gave me a clue in to who are the leads of the movie especially if I haven’t seen the film yet. Retaining the thumbnails to click directly to the screenplay is a plus because it also serves as an attractor for the site. I also think changing a bit of the homepage can make a simple site give it some depth. It doesn’t need to have flashy animations since those can make downloading problematic for users who prefers using a particular browser over the other. This is the white space I was referring to earlier. The “Welcome Page” at the bottom seemed out of place.

It would benefit if it was on top the homepage. It appeared to me like an afterthought. Another item that can benefit in a change of position is the “TV Transcripts.” It has its own section too and just probably under the “New Releases” section if they’re planning a future layout change. I’m also in need of reading free TV screenplays too because I also want to write for TV one day and finding resources can be challenging. Even if IMSDb posted few shows on their site, this is still helpful. It just needed better visibility. It already felt like since these were few shows to acquire, it needed to be set to the side so no one else will criticize why they have few links.
Another possible reason why few were posted, probably because studios are guarding their property so giving access to free material may not be in their best interests so my hunt for TV screenplays for study continues. So working with the sequence they have on the site, they can set after that, the other advertisement links to completely utilize the white space. In terms of interactivity, the chat screen that was on the left side of the site doesn’t quite feel as a good attractor for me, because in my thinking (being a script storage site), I would likely be in chatting range with an industry person which is not the case. I’ve visited official pages of industry people and they give paid services for consultancy to mentorships. So this chat screen here was set up probably as a casual movie chat room. Nevertheless, it looked dubious to me and I’m very wary on these rooms because who else could be on the other end. If IMSDb plans to have a chat room set up to add as an attractor, they can probably use it for screenplay related questions for visitors on the site.
Probably a helpdesk to inform about broken links which I’ve encountered in this site. Navigating to the screenplay link page, I still see the items on the left which supposed to be on the homepage. It was distracting finding sponsored advertisement flashing like a convenience store sign. I did like there was the movie poster, IMDB note and the writer and its genre. However, I didn’t like seeing the advertisements in-between the IMDB link and the Writers link. I had to read carefully what link I have to click or else get directed out of the site. The screenplay link was hard to see.

I think the font has to be larger and move the advertisements outside the frame if they want to keep it. The site map was standard either click on the IMSDb logo on the left or use the back button to get back to the previous page. Another thing to add in navigation, would be a link back in this case, a link to IMDB “The Avengers 2012″ but if it was a different movie, if it was a non-mainstream movie, and I still don’t know who are the other actors or directors, this linking back will get me to the casts, directors, writers links and check what other projects they’ve done prior to this project. Now, if the screenplay page, the search field could be situation on the right-hand corner then below it a drop-down to the alphabet list to make it streamlined. Genre section can be brought up on the left side. In the issue of content, I didn’t find the comment section particularly set as a good attractor here. Will the visitors be commenting about the screenplay itself or about the movie?
I guess probably both but one could go straight to IMDB forums which has more forum activity than here. Maybe they can use this section to link to movie’s official trailers as one-stop exposure to the movie than having to open a different tab, type in the movie title then search for the official trailers.
Still on content and accessibility, IMSDb fulfilled their objective in providing free resource however, the cautionary reminder from the writers’ group I subscribed to before informed everyone that the scripts found here were in.txt format not in.pdf like most I’ve seen in other sites offering screenplay paid resources. I think for me since all of Marvel scripts are not available for study online (except for this one), I will study screenplays using IMSDb for flow of scenes then if I come across a paid screenplay site with “The Avengers 2012″ script, I will buy and see the difference because I’ve read at the writers’ group, the scripts usually on paid sites were already shooting scripts which has already camera directions which makes reading confusing. This.txt format doesn’t bother me either because I can just copy and paste to Word doc and it’s formatted correctly so it’s no problem. I’ve also bought physical scripts from other movies for study to also help understand on how formatting looked on paper.
